Italy - Day 3 - May 2, 2019

Last day in Florence! We woke up feeling more jet lagged, but managed to get out at a decent time. We ate breakfast at La Loggia Degli Albizi. I had a mini croissant pizza with a small cannoli and a cappuccino. Steve had a turkey sandwich and a pastry with ricotta cheese and chocolate. Such a great breakfast!

We walked next to see The David at the Florence Accademia Gallery. We waited in line for about 2 hours but it was well worth the wait for two reasons. First, a man was painting small portraits of the Florence skyline, and I bought the one he had finished while we were standing there, a perfect keepsake! Second, the museum itself had a lot to offer other than just The David. It was filled with religious art from Florence which is always interesting to see. The catholic influence was real as many pieces featured the Madonna.
The David!

The David was incredible! It stood about 17 feet tall and was so detailed. Michaelangelo was incredibly meticulous in his sculptures. It was not as crowded as I had previously read, so that was a bonus.

After the Academia, we went back near the Duomo for lunch. We ate at Panini Toscani. It was a very small space, filled with brick and hanging meats. Once the line moves, a man tells you about the three meat offerings and the four cheese offerings. The flavors, where it comes from, etc. Every single thing was so delicious! I added sun-dried tomatoes to my sandwich as well as argula. Steve added the tomatoes and peppers. We got some wine and sat down outside just next to the Duomo.

After lunch we got tickets for the Duomo and started at the tower. The tower has stairs (466 of them to the top). Unfortunately they were too narrow and high for Steve, but I made it to the top with amazing panoramic views of the city. We got in line for the cathedral next, which was closing as we got inside. It was surprisingly empty, but still beautiful. We missed going to the crypts by about 5 minutes, which was a disappointment, but we have to remember that we cannot see everything. That's more me needing to remember. We stopped at the hotel for a bit and ate gelato on the way. I had lemon and Steve had a mix of amaretto and tiramisu.

We next walked to a new part of town to Senz Astro Bistro. Steve had looked this up prior, and it had outstanding reviews and the menu was a little different than what we had been seeing around Florence. It. Was. So. Fantastic. Our meal was so special, I had to outline it in full:
Appetizers-
Hillary: onion bread burrata
Steve: turnip variety with dark chocolate and blue cheese
Dinner:
Hillary- Guinea Fowl with cream, balsamic and pumpkin
Steve- fish of the day Sea Bass with lemon cream and greens
Dessert:
Coffee mousse with coconut ice cream and strawberries with limoncello

We LOVED everything about this place! We had complementary sparkling wine, small zucchini/tomato sampler and a free second glass of limoncello. The wine was some of the best I’ve had here! I had Vernaccia di San Gimignano and a new love began.

After dinner we walked back to our hotel to discover a hidden roof top patio with beautiful views! Now it’s time to pack up and move on to San Gimignano!

Favorite things!:
Hillary – climbing the tower stairs, the David, all the food!
Steve- The David, our dinner, and seeing the other part of Florence
